The parish gathered on Sunday 14th of September to celebrate and mark the Jubilee Year in the Parish of Avoca. Sincerest thanks to all who helped organise, the school for supporting the event, the sound, hospitality, and Prof Muiris O’Sullivan for his excellent input on the history of the parish and the notion of pilgrimage. You can see some images below and more can be found on the parish social media accounts:

Watch the video below of Fr Michael sharing a bit on what a Jubilee is and how it will be celebrated in the parish of Avoca:

What is a Jubilee?

Jubilee Years – also known as Holy Years – began in 1300AD, and occur every 25 years. Jubilee Years can be called at other times, such as the Year of Mercy in 2016. These Years, the Church explains, are years โ€œof reconciliation between adversaries, of conversion and receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation, […] and consequently of solidarity, hope, justice, commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers and sisters.โ€

Characteristics of a Jubilee

  • Pilgrimage
  • Holy Door
  • Reconciliation
  • Prayer
  • Liturgy
